Choosing your wedding band is one of the most meaningful decisions you will make during your engagement. While your engagement ring marks the proposal, your wedding band is the piece which you will wear every day, without fail; the core symbol of commitment that stays with you long after the celebrations are over. Unlike many elements of a wedding, your rings are not fleeting details; they are designed to be worn for a lifetime, and hopefully cherished for generations to come.

At Serena Ansell Fine Jewellery, we guide you in selecting or creating a wedding band that reflects your personal style, while seamlessly fitting into your everyday life. Each band is approached with the same philosophy as our bespoke engagement rings: thoughtful design, exceptional stones (if you choose to use them), and craftsmanship cultivated in the heart of London by the very best. Whether paired with a Serena Ansell engagement ring or an heirloom piece, the process is personal, collaborative and entirely tailored to you, making sure it’s a ring you will love forever.

What is a wedding band?

A wedding band is traditionally a simple ring exchanged during the wedding ceremony to symbolise marriage. Historically plain gold, contemporary wedding bands now range from said classic polished bands, to diamond-set eternity rings, fitted bands and fully bespoke designs.

For many, it becomes the ring worn most consistently, so it should be comfortable to wear and reflective of your personal style. We encourage our clients to think timeless rather than trend-led.

Who buys the wedding rings?

Historically, each partner purchased the other’s ring, but today there are no strict rules. Lots of couples choose their bands together, viewing the process as a shared experience and a way to celebrate the upcoming marriage. Others prefer to gift one another their chosen design. Serena will work with you both, or individually, to explore the best options for you.

When to buy your wedding band

We recommend beginning the process a minimum of two months before your wedding. This gives you enough time for thoughtful design consultation without being too close to the busy run-up to your big day. . Regardless of where you bought your engagement ring, we can design a wedding band to sit perfectly next to it. Rushing this stage can compromise harmony and fit, so allowing as much time as possible will ensure the final piece is perfect and ready for your special day.

Choosing your style

Your lifestyle should guide your choice as much as aesthetics. So it is worth considering:

  • Profile: Court, flat or D-shaped bands each sit differently on the hand.

  • Width: Slim bands feel delicate and refined; wider bands make a confident statement.

  • Optional Diamond detail: Full eternity, half-set or subtle pavé? Each creates a different balance beside your engagement ring.

  • Texture and finish: High polish, brushed gold, or hand-engraved details offer subtle individuality and a sentimental detail.

During your bespoke consultation, Serena will sketch ideas, show you some physical examples, discuss proportions and refine the design with you. The aim is not just to select a band, but to create one that feels uniquely yours.

Choosing the metal to suit your engagement ring

Metal choice plays a crucial role in cohesion. Many brides opt to match the metal of their engagement ring; yellow gold with yellow gold, platinum with platinum, for a seamless look. Serena also strongly advises doing this because different metals have different hardness, so putting a platinum band or a 9-carat band next to an 18-carat band will wear away the 18-carat gold band over time, because it is slightly softer.

Serena only uses high-quality 9-carat, 18-carat gold and platinum, selected for longevity and durability. During your consultation, we can compare metals against your skin tone and existing jewellery to ensure a flattering, balanced result.

Complementing your engagement ring with your wedding band

The relationship between the two rings is essential, and the wedding band should feel intentional.

With trilogy engagement rings, for example, the presence of side stones or a prominent centre diamond often requires a thoughtfully contoured or fully bespoke band to ensure the rings sit seamlessly together. Rather than forcing a straight band to leave a gap, we design fitted wedding bands that will fit perfectly next to the shape of the stones, enhancing their presence while preserving balance and elegance.

If your engagement ring sits higher on the finger, you often have greater flexibility in your choice of wedding band. The additional height typically allows a straight band to sit neatly beneath the setting without leaving a gap. In this case, you may opt for a classic flat or court-profile band, a diamond-set eternity ring, or even a slightly wider design to create contrast, all while maintaining a clean, seamless line between the two rings. However, if your engagement ring requires a shaped band, there is nothing stopping you from having a stone-set band.

At Serena Ansell Fine Jewellery, each bespoke wedding band is created with careful consideration of your existing ring. During your consultation, we assess the scale and stone placement to make sure they will complement each other perfectly,  whatever its shape.

Personalising your wedding bands

Personalisation transforms a beautiful ring into an even more meaningful heirloom.

Options include:

  • Hand engraving and hidden details  inside the band

  • Incorporating heirloom stones

  • A bespoke design, shape and look which is entirely unique to you

To us, a wedding band is more than a ring. It is a continuation of your story of love. By combining considered design and attention to detail, excellent craftsmanship and a personal approach, Serena Ansell ensures your band feels timeless, elegant and entirely your own.
